I often get the question, “What is a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine)?” A D.O. is fully licensed physician who receives the same training as a Medical Doctor or M.D. They may practice in all fields of medicine. In addition to traditional medicine, D.O.s are trained to use a holistic approach to medicine by incorporating working with their hands to diagnose and treat patients. D.O.s receive special training in the musculoskeletal system. They spend, on minimum, an extra 200 hours learning how to treat with their hands using osteopathic manipulative medicine. This advanced training provides D.O.s with a keen understanding of how the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. When appropriate, Osteopathic Manipulation can complement and, in some circumstances, even replace medications or prevent the necessity of surgery. By combining their musculoskeletal knowledge with the latest advances in medical technology, they can offer patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today.
What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?
OMT can help people of all ages and backgrounds, from infancy to the elderly. It may be the answer to help you with tension headaches, muscle pain, whiplash injuries, carpel tunnel or low back pain as well as several other conditions, as it assists your body naturally realign and heal itself. When your body is out of alignment, or you have poor posture, it takes more energy from you as your muscles struggle to keep this imbalanced position and also makes you more prone to injuries as your body mechanics are not smooth anymore.
D.O.s may use techniques such as myofascial release, muscle energy, soft tissue, stretching, ligamentous articular release or high velocity low amplitude to help restore idea body posture. These gentle treatments can help treat and restore muscle and tissue balance, decrease joint restriction and promote overall health and wellness within the body.
