Addressing Minimum Wage in the New Year
Hello Flagstaff and welcome, 2018! There are a couple things in store for this New Year that I’d like to take a moment to address. As many of you know, the minimum wage went up with the beginning of the year across Arizona to $10.50, and in Flagstaff, it climbed to $11. This is a result of voters here in town passing Proposition 414 at the same time as statewide voters passed Proposition 206. Last January, the Council took steps to reconcile the two minimum wage bills in a way that respected … [Read more...] about Addressing Minimum Wage in the New Year
Personal Wellness, Balance Might Be Easier Than You Think
“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.” ~ Zig Ziglar To achieve and maintain personal wellness, we need more than motivation. Wellness requires a daily “personal” commitment. Wellness is much more than physical health, exercise and nutrition. It is the integration of everything in our lives that makes us who we are. To be fully well, we must have balance in all areas of our life – social, emotional, spiritual, … [Read more...] about Personal Wellness, Balance Might Be Easier Than You Think
Financial Considerations in Divorce
So, you’ve just been served with divorce papers. What now? Following the initial shock of being served, panic and a feeling of being overwhelmed often seems to hit next. If minor children are involved, the biggest fear often revolves around custody and parenting plans. At the same time, financial concerns such as who is going to live in the house and pay the bills become a reality, because in most cases, one party to the divorce moves out and the other stays, at least temporarily. If both … [Read more...] about Financial Considerations in Divorce
New Year, New Car!
Sometimes the most unexpected things happen at the most unexpected moments. Sometimes they are small encounters, sometimes they are so much larger than one could fathom. Some call these moments fate or destiny. Flagstaff resident Meg Adakai calls her unexpected moment a true blessing. Adakai won a new 2018 Toyota Camry, just before her 30th birthday and Christmas, after buying a raffle ticket as part of Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation’s annual Turquoise Ball. All funds raised … [Read more...] about New Year, New Car!
Learning About Continuing Care Retirement Communities
One of the hardest challenges I have had to make for my parents was navigating the resources available for aging family members, especially learning about facilities that provide them with care throughout their aging process. When trying to research the options, it can be overwhelming, as there is language used in the senior living industry that is not necessarily common in the layperson’s world. A term I wish I would have explored when I was considering living options for my father is CCRCs, … [Read more...] about Learning About Continuing Care Retirement Communities
Identifying County Priorities for the State Legislative Session
The New Year is here and the county is prepared for challenges that may face us. The Arizona State Legislature began its 2018 legislative session earlier this month and the governor and legislators are now at work crafting legislation, hearing bills in committee and writing the next state budget. The decisions made at the State Capitol greatly affect the citizens of Coconino County and sadly, the state's recent revenue projections may not leave the state with a lot of options this … [Read more...] about Identifying County Priorities for the State Legislative Session
Teller Continues Looking Up
As a youngster, Arlando Teller stood in the yard of his Chinle home on the Navajo Reservation and looked up at an azure sky pebbled with popcorn clouds and jet contrails. He wondered where those white streaks crisscrossing the wild blue yonder were headed. When he graduated from Chinle High School in 1991, his continuing curiosity prompted him to find out. He wanted to become a part of that high-flying adventure. He enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – home of the Eagles – in … [Read more...] about Teller Continues Looking Up
Armored Outdoor Gear Positioning for Growth
On a hot day in the Grand Canyon many years ago, Jim Bell was sitting under a tree watching a squirrel systematically defeat the food protection system he had positioned on a far branch of a tree. The animal easily passed through the barriers and proceeded to chew through the sack to the food. The incident inspired Bell to create the Ratsack Cache Storage Bag. Made of lightweight stainless steel mesh, it makes it nearly impossible for gnawing critters like mice, squirrel, raccoons and … [Read more...] about Armored Outdoor Gear Positioning for Growth
Local real estate agent buys iconic Route 66 club
Since Labor Day weekend 2017, things have looked a bit dicey for the future of Flagstaff’s beloved Museum Club, a Route 66 icon for more than 80 years. The club, which is on the U.S. Register of Historic Places, was closed and put up for sale in September by the last owners, Mary Butwinick and Bret Rios. Good news for the historic roadhouse came recently in the form of Flagstaff resident Dru Douthit, who bought the club and became sole owner before the end of the year. An Arizona … [Read more...] about Local real estate agent buys iconic Route 66 club
