Understanding the Benefits of Freedom of Thought, Expression
In my younger days, I was pretty intractable, convinced that I was always right. When my wife, Tracy, reads this, she’ll do an eye-roll and think “was?” but I really have gotten much better about allowing for the possibility that I might be wrong. (At some point, I had to give in to overwhelming evidence of my fallibility.) Unfortunately, the belief that we’re infallible infects us as a society. This is a pernicious threat to our future. Believing that we’re infallible leads to the … [Read more...] about Understanding the Benefits of Freedom of Thought, Expression

I truly believe this one decision is the toughest for any founder/CEO to make. It involves coming to the realization that your “baby” may have outgrown you. Are You Making These Observations? As you go about the day-to-day of running your organization, are you wishing you had another you to help? Are you … [Read more...] about When Should the Founder Hire a CEO?

Boosting Biocrust
Most of us look at the ground and notice dirt, but soil scientists see a whole micro world of organisms that make up what they refer to as “Earth’s living skin.” “We call that very thin layer on the surface of the soil ‘biological crust,’ or ‘biocrust’ for short,” explained Northern Arizona University School of Forestry Assistant Professor Matt Bowker, Ph.D. “It’s held together by living organisms, mostly cyanobacteria and fungi, that weave through the soil. They make a platform that other … [Read more...] about Boosting Biocrust

Lifestyle Change Reflected on the Menu
Late last month, the historic Grand Canyon Café was sold. Paul Moir, one of the buyers, said he hopes to take the restaurant to its 100th year. “I’m 48 now, so I’ll be 75 then. I can see that happening,” said Moir. “I think it will be realistic to take it there. The Grand Canyon Café has been open for more than 70 years. It is a Route 66 landmark. Half of the menu is Chinese food and half is American food. It has been owned for 71 years by the Wong Family.
