My hobby? I am rebuilding my goat. I enjoy activities with family and friends as often as possible; however, it wasn’t until I started rebuilding my “goat” that I realized the benefit of having a hobby. By hobby, I mean an activity outside of my normal, daily work and family time; an activity I engage in just for the sheer enjoyment of it. In 1992, I purchased a 1969 Pontiac GTO. Although Pontiac used the name GTO Tiger in its advertising, the car soon acquired the nickname goat. I drove my … [Read more...] about Having a Hobby is a Must for Physical, Mental, Emotional Health

Does the Change in Temperature Mean a Change in the Way Real Estate is Handled?
Possibly. Probably. Not likely. We don’t really know. There are certainly trends that seem to follow year over year, but when people need to move, they move. Summer has historically been Flagstaff’s selling season. Soaring Phoenix temperatures send folks to the high country, and kids are out of school, so if folks have been contemplating a change, summer is an ideal time to accomplish that. Also, the weather cooperates for a move. Mild temperatures, no snow or ice, etc., make for a smooth … [Read more...] about Does the Change in Temperature Mean a Change in the Way Real Estate is Handled?
Understanding the Pros and Cons of Technology-Based Benefit Enrollment
The annual open enrollment period is a daunting time for both employers and employees; it is a lot of work for companies and can be a confusing process for workers. For instance, if you have 20 employees and offer five benefit plans with several documents correlated to each plan, you will be sifting through many documents during open enrollment, not to mention trying to get everyone together to hear the same information. However, by using technology-based enrollment, you can save time and money … [Read more...] about Understanding the Pros and Cons of Technology-Based Benefit Enrollment
Six Ways to Improve Depression
I have worked with people who have depression for over 20 years. There are a few essential things to know about Major Depressive illness. It is a neurologically-based brain disease. There is an overwhelming amount of scientific research backing that. Nevertheless, non-biological things like kindness have the potential to make it better. Understanding Ballot Issues: Courthouse, Public Transit
The City of Flagstaff needs a new courthouse. No question about it. It is a city obligation to process our criminal and traffic infractions. No one likes to pay for courthouses or jails, but they are part of the system that keeps us safe. We have wrung every dollar of use that we can from the present courthouse. It is literally falling apart. And the timing is good because Coconino County wants to go 50/50 with us on a new shared downtown courthouse with a parking garage. Let me repeat that – … [Read more...] about Understanding Ballot Issues: Courthouse, Public Transit

The Point of Your Life
Flying home from visiting my 92-year-old mother in Orlando recently, I reflected on the length and the shortness of life. It struck me that my mother has lived almost exactly twice as long as my first wife (Debbie), who lived to be 46. By most standards, Mom has lived a long life (with more to go), while Debbie’s life was tragically brief. Despite the vast differences in the length of their lives, both lived well. As I flew across the country, I re-read portions of Marcus Aurelius’ … [Read more...] about The Point of Your Life
