Signs of Forest Restoration In the foothills of central New Mexico’s Manzano Mountains, Phil Archuletta has seen the signs of the future. In fact, he has seen many signs since he founded P&M Signs in 2009. His business plan is to turn small diameter ponderosa pine trees, which few people want, along with plastic milk containers, which have already been thrown away, into signs and home building materials. He calls the compound he has created Altree, because it uses the whole tree – the … [Read more...] about The Changing Face of Southwestern Forests and Forest Products
Employing the Unemployable
Reputedly the most famous restaurant in Los Angeles, The Original Pantry at 9th and Figueroa, was a frequent Sunday breakfast destination for my family when I was growing up. Incidental to the memory is one of my parents talking about how the place employed only ex-convicts who did everything from managing the restaurant to flipping the hot cakes. While the restaurant’s … [Read more...] about Employing the Unemployable

In Perfect Harmony
A suitable symbol for the synchronicity of happy and unifying elements for the future of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra in its 65th season were the two black grand pianos played by Northern Arizona University faculty members Rita Borden and Janice ChenJu Chiang, whose sparkling performances during “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens were a memorable highlight of the symphony’s opening concert Friday, Sept. 26 in Ardrey Auditorium on campus. Other highlights of the opening … [Read more...] about In Perfect Harmony

The two-page insert is the result of a partnership between Flagstaff Business News and two entities at Northern Arizona University: The W.A. Franke College of Business and the School of … [Read more...] about New BizJack Publication Highlights Student-Oriented Business Stories
Babbitt Ranches Welcomes Black-Footed Ferret Back to Grasslands
They sound like chipmunks or cactus wrens, but the rapid fire chattering of black-footed ferrets hasn’t been heard naturally on Arizona grasslands since 1931. Some call the reintroduction of 26 ferrets to the Babbitt Ranches’ Espee Ranch on Oct. 1 “personal” and “magical.” Some call it a “milestone” after years of wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, tribes and private landowners working together. Bill Cordasco calls it the result of values. Cordasco, president of Babbitt Ranches, … [Read more...] about Babbitt Ranches Welcomes Black-Footed Ferret Back to Grasslands
