Everyone these days understands the health hazards associated with smoking tobacco. What most people don’t realize is that sitting for long periods of time, day in and day out, can be just as unhealthy and cause numerous health conditions similar to smoking. Although Americans are keenly aware of the hazards associated with tobacco use, we seem to be blind to the health hazards associated with decreased mobility and sitting, which increases our risks of health conditions. Lack of mobility … [Read more...] about Sitting: The New Smoking

Everything I Needed to Know about Business I Learned from My Newspaper Route
This week I had a student in my management class ask which job taught me the most about running a business. As I thought back it, I realized it was probably my newspaper route in Ohio, delivering the Ravenna Record-Courier. I’m not sure which is more unfortunate; the fact that fewer and fewer people read the daily newspaper, or if it is that young entrepreneurs don’t have the opportunity to be newspaper delivery boys or girls. I was given my newspaper route at the age of 11, and delivered … [Read more...] about Everything I Needed to Know about Business I Learned from My Newspaper Route
Community Encouraged to Get Involved During Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and while there is no typical personality for an abuser, there are some signs to be aware of when working with vulnerable populations, like youth who’ve witnessed domestic violence in the past, to keep the cycle from continuing. In Coconino County children are removed from their unsafe living environment due to domestic violence and a Court Appointed Special Advocate can serve as a role model to help break the cycle of violence. The … [Read more...] about Community Encouraged to Get Involved During Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Thanks for Flying Locally
It has been a very busy summer at your Flagstaff Airport. As many of you know, we had to close the runway down for seven days in June to perform maintenance. During this closure, crews removed two inches of asphalt from the surface of the runway, replaced it with new asphalt and then painted to the newest standards. This was an extremely aggressive schedule. Several airports around the state were required to perform the same work over the last two years. No other airport was able to perform this … [Read more...] about Thanks for Flying Locally

Understanding One-Sided Hearing Loss
Do you or someone you know have a hearing loss in one ear and were told nothing could be done about it? That was the common misconception many years ago. With this type of hearing loss, a person will experience difficulty understanding speech in a noisy room and locating the source of a sound. Many times significant emotional strain is created because others feel that you should hear just fine with one ear. They can’t understand why you hear some of the time and not all the time. The good news … [Read more...] about Understanding One-Sided Hearing Loss
Just the (Fascia) Facts: Why Myofascial Release is so Beneficial
Fascia is the head-to-toe connective tissue that runs throughout the entire body. The fascia encompasses all the body’s internal structures, connecting everything together, even penetrating the muscles, organs and fatty tissues, and connecting bones to muscles and organs to each other. It looks like an extremely large spider web, with each thread connecting to another, which connects to another, and so on. Because the fascia is connected to the muscles and every other part of the body’s … [Read more...] about Just the (Fascia) Facts: Why Myofascial Release is so Beneficial
Kicking Off the United Way Campaign: United We Win!
This month, Coconino County kicked off its annual United Way of Northern Arizona (UWNA) Fundraising Campaign for our employees. As a Pacesetter for UWNA, we start our campaign early and end sooner to help set the tone for the rest of the area. We, at the county, could not succeed as much as we do in serving the citizens of Coconino County without the help of our non-profit partner agencies. These partners provide services to those in need, helping us to improve lives and improve our … [Read more...] about Kicking Off the United Way Campaign: United We Win!
