Local podcasters have found creative ways to voice their messages. One pair records in a back bedroom inside a blanket fort to get the acoustics right. But now, the Sun Sounds studio is open for rent, offering professional broadcasting equipment. Sun Sounds is a non-profit radio station that helps the blind or other visually impaired by keeping them up on current events by having newspapers, magazine and books read out loud. The service can also be useful for those with dyslexia, a … [Read more...] about Sun Sounds Turning Up the Volume for Podcasters

Babbitt Ranches Soaring with Eagles
Efforts are underway to increase the number of golden eagles on Babbitt Ranches in Northern Arizona. Researchers are concerned a drier, warmer climate may be changing the prey base – decreasing the number of small mammals that the eagles eat – and at the same time, increasing populations of harmful insects that can be deadly to eaglets. “When the vegetation is more sparse, we can see fewer jackrabbits, fewer cottontails. And that type of an effect reverberates across the landscape, with … [Read more...] about Babbitt Ranches Soaring with Eagles
Housing Divide Challenging the Region’s Vitality
Amanda and Andrew Atherton will likely be moving away from Flagstaff this summer, primarily because of the area’s cost of living. Married for two years, the couple would love to stay in Flagstaff, but the high cost of rentals makes saving for a home down payment too difficult. Amanda is finishing a graduate degree in mathematics at Northern Arizona University, and as part of her scholarship, will work for two years at a high-needs middle or high school, most likely in the Prescott region. … [Read more...] about Housing Divide Challenging the Region’s Vitality
New Year, New Car!
Sometimes the most unexpected things happen at the most unexpected moments. Sometimes they are small encounters, sometimes they are so much larger than one could fathom. Some call these moments fate or destiny. Flagstaff resident Meg Adakai calls her unexpected moment a true blessing. Adakai won a new 2018 Toyota Camry, just before her 30th birthday and Christmas, after buying a raffle ticket as part of Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation’s annual Turquoise Ball. All funds raised … [Read more...] about New Year, New Car!
Flagstaff Tackling Traffic Congestion
Anybody who has lived in Flagstaff for a while may well agree: driving on Milton Road during rush hour at the height of tourist season can be frustrating. The same may hold true on Highway 180 from Baderville into town during a holiday weekend in the winter when there is snow. The concerns have been documented and studied and city leadership is well aware of the crowded roadways. The Arizona Department of Transportation, together with the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, Northern … [Read more...] about Flagstaff Tackling Traffic Congestion

Educators Comparing Mount Vesuvius Eruption with Northern Arizona’s Volcanic Activity
One of the most noted natural disasters in history was the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried and preserved the Roman city of Pompeii in volcanic ash and rock. Educators like Sari Custer, vice president of curiosity at the Arizona Science Center, compare the volcanic activity with geologic processes in Northern Arizona. “When Mount Vesuvius was erupting, there were over 600 volcanoes in Arizona at that time. So, there was a lot of activity happening here, which was happening in Italy. … [Read more...] about Educators Comparing Mount Vesuvius Eruption with Northern Arizona’s Volcanic Activity
Local Inventor Creating Planet Rider for Everyday Commutes
Flagstaff inventor and serial entrepreneur David Calley wants to change the way we get around town on our daily commutes. He has designed a new kind of vehicle that is something between an electric car and an electric bicycle. He calls it Planet Rider and expects it will be on the streets of Flagstaff sometime next year. “It looks and moves like nothing you’ve been in before,” said Calley, the founder of Southwest Windpower and Electric Torque Machines. “There are three wheels – two in the … [Read more...] about Local Inventor Creating Planet Rider for Everyday Commutes
Death by Outhouse is Nothing to Poo Poo
Outhouses may feel like a convenient lifesaver for those who really need to go in the woods, but they can become a nasty deathtrap for birds. Cavity nesters like woodpeckers, Boreal Owls and American Kestrels are going into the dark openings of the ventilation pipes – perhaps to roost, cache some food or build a nest – but they cannot get out and they end up in the holding tank. So, the Teton Raptor Center has created the Poo Poo Project and is partnering with land agencies and organizations in … [Read more...] about Death by Outhouse is Nothing to Poo Poo
