Improving education and growing Arizona’s economy were topics of discussion during a June 1 Legislative Town Hall session hosted by the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce featuring State Senator Sylvia Allen and State Representatives Brenda Barton and Bob Thorpe. Sen. Allen, a realtor by trade, said Arizona is doing what it can to fund education, but the economy is still not where it was before the Great Recession. “The money [for education] will only come as fast as our economy recovers. … [Read more...] about Town Hall Discussion Addresses Education, Economy

Fire and Ice: Extreme Weather Hits Vineyards in Arizona, France
Severe weather has wreaked havoc with winemakers on both sides of the Atlantic this spring. As adjusting with the elements is a staple of agriculture, Arizona winemakers and aficionados anxiously watched destructive flames approach Sonoita, the state’s oldest continuous viticultural area located south of Tucson. Meanwhile, Sonoita-Elgin, its counterpart in France’s Bordeaux and Burgundy regions, was taking extreme measures to keep vineyards warm through the night, fighting off the worst frost … [Read more...] about Fire and Ice: Extreme Weather Hits Vineyards in Arizona, France
Cultivating a Milkweed Movement for Monarchs
Mike Wagner carefully examines shelves of milkweed plants growing in the Northern Arizona University Greenhouse. Of the 30 milkweed species native to Arizona, 15 are being cultivated here from wild seeds. They are also sharing a room with a tropical milkweed topped in bright pink flowers that Wagner calls “a monarch magnet.” Wagner, Ph.D., an NAU Regents Professor Emeritus, is among a number of entomologists and educators concerned about the striking orange and black monarch butterfly. The … [Read more...] about Cultivating a Milkweed Movement for Monarchs
Economy Boosted by Flagstaff-Area Residential Construction
Caleb and Rachel Waters live in a 550-square-foot house. With a nearly two-year-old son and a second baby on the way, their new Flagstaff home will bring some much-needed space. “We could have purchased a 1970s home and spent $100,000 in renovations, but it made more sense to build our own sustainable house,” said Rachel, a museum conservator. Caleb is no stranger to building. As a maintenance mechanic supervisor for the National Park Service, he oversees construction, buildings, roads and … [Read more...] about Economy Boosted by Flagstaff-Area Residential Construction
Bringing Order to Downtown Parking
Welcome to the wacky world of vehicular parking in the heart of downtown Flagstaff: two-hour parking limits; drivers moving cars frequently to avoid fines; stores with no parking for employees and customers; visitors who give up and drive away; and residents with no place to park near their homes. These conditions have been a cause of complaints for frustrated motorists for more than 25 years. Some say they have only grown worse as the modest mountain town has accommodated a growing number of … [Read more...] about Bringing Order to Downtown Parking

Breathing New Life into Meteor City Trading Post
One of a number of symbols of bygone days along historic Route 66 in Northern Arizona, today only rickety structures, rubble and graffiti mark the spot where Meteor City used to reign supreme as a must-see stop for fans of the legendary Mother Road. The Meteor City Trading Post, named in honor of the nearby Meteor or Barringer Crater, is the first of three Route 66-inspired roadside attractions located only a few miles apart along a 30-mile stretch west on Interstate 40 from Winslow to … [Read more...] about Breathing New Life into Meteor City Trading Post
